Learn How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

Our service team is here to help you learn more about vehicle car, including learning how to check your transmission fluid:

  • To start, turn on your engine. After a few minutes, your engine will be warmed up. Ensure your vehicle is in park and then open the hood.
  • Next, you’ll want to find the transmission fluid dipstick. This varies depending on the make and model (often to the right of the oil dipstick in front-wheel drive cars). If you aren’t sure where it’s located, check your owner’s manual.
  • Remove the dipstick. Then, touch the fluid. If the fluid looks dirty or smells burnt, then you’ll likely need to schedule service and replace your transmission fluid.

If you’d like to replace the fluid yourself, start by wiping off the dipstick with a rag before returning it to its original position. Remove the dipstick once more and check the level. If the level of fluid falls under the “full” marking, you will need to add some more using a funnel (be sure not to overfill).

How Often Should You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Generally, it’s best to check fluid levels in your vehicle roughly once a month. In addition to transmission fluid, it’s helpful to check your power steering fluid and engine oil. If you notice anything amiss while performing these checks, feel free to bring your car to our Overland Park-area dealership for service and we’d be happy to help!

Sealed Transmissions

What is a sealed transmission? If you drive a vehicle that has a sealed transmission, this means the vehicle has no dipstick that measures your transmission fluid levels. It’s best not to attempt checking fluid levels, as this can damage your vehicle. Feel free to bring in your vehicle to our Olathe-area service center and we can do the work for you safely.

Sealed transmissions are built to limit wasted fluid, which can save you money in the long run. However, not every brand of vehicle uses this type of transmission. If you notice odd noises when you change gears or your gears hesitate while changing, there may be an issue with your sealed transmission. Always consult your owner’s manual if you aren’t sure what type of transmission your vehicle has!

More About Transmission Fluid

  • Note that transmission fluid types may vary depending on your make, model, and model year (may also vary between automatic and manual transmissions).
  • If you have a manual transmission, you will typically need a jack in order to access the plug beneath your car where the transmission is located.
  • Generally, it’s best to replace your transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles. However, this figure can vary based on your driving habits, type of transmission, and your vehicle itself.
